How do I obtain the SPT Connect software?
The SPT Connect software is distributed via the USB stick in the SPT product package. Alternatively you can download (the latest version) via the NightBalance website.

» If you would like to install from the USB stick, please insert the USB stick into a USB port on your computer.

 

» If you would like to download the installation files, please visit www.nightbalance.com/software/ and click on the download button.

When downloading the software I receive a warning saying the software could be dangerous!

The following warning: “SPTConnect is not commonly downloaded and could be dangerous.” is shown because the software is relatively new and has not been downloaded via the internet by a large number of people. Therefore the system indicates that it is unknown/unfamiliar software and therefore indicates it could be harmful. If you download the software directly from our website (www.nightbalance.com) it is safe to continue.

» 1. Click on the small button with the arrow inside, next to the ‘Discard’ button.

 

» 2. An additional list with options is presented. In this list click ‘Keep’ to approve the software download.

 

» 3. The warning icon disappears and the NightBalance icon is shown. Double-click the file to install the software.

How do I start the SPT Connect software installation?

When you insert the USB stick into the USB port, the autorun software will automatically start the installation wizard.

What should I do if nothing happens when I insert the USB stick into my disc drive?

The Windows operating system or another protection program may prevent the program from starting automatically.

» 1. Go to ‘My Computer’ or ‘Windows Explorer’ and navigate to your USB stick.

 

» 2. Double click the ‘autostart.exe’ file to execute the installation wizard.

The User Account Control service shows a dialog. Is it safe to click yes?

This service prevents software from automatically installing software on your computer. It is safe to install the SPT Connect software.

» 1. Click ‘Yes’ in the dialog box.

What is the installation wizard, and what does it do?

The wizard will inform you about the correct use of the Sleep Position Trainer and will install the SPT Connect software on your computer.

I have clicked through all steps of the wizard but no software was installed on my computer.

Did you click the button with “Install SPT Connect” about halfway in the process of the wizard?

» 1. Go to step 16 in the wizard where you will see a blue button with “Install SPT Connect”.

When the SPT Connect software installer is presented, what should I do?

The installer will install the software files on your computer; it will help you select the items for installation and select the location on your computer.

» The software can only be installed when you accepted the End User License Agreement.

 

» The prerequisites that are installed are the USB drivers (FTDI) and the .NET Framework for Windows.

 

» The location for the files is automatically set to the ‘Program Files’ folder but you can choose a different location.

 

» The installer will place an icon on your desktop and a new Start Menu folder with the name ‘NightBalance’ from which you can start the SPT Connect software.

I have to restart my computer after the .NET Framework is installed. Is that correct? And how do I continue the installation?

The SPT Connect software can only be installed properly whenever the computer is started with the correct .NET Framework.

» When the .NET Framework updater shows a dialog box to restart the computer choose ‘Yes’.

 

» After rebooting the computer the SPT Connect installation should continue automatically. If your operating system prevents this, please, re-start the installation wizard (re-insert USB stick) and click ‘Install SPT Connect’ from the wizard.

How do I connect the SPT to the computer?

By using the cable included in the package, please, physically connect your SPT to your computer. When the connection is made you will be asked if you wish to register a new account or log in with an existing one. Please, note that the SPT Connect software has to have been installed.

How do I switch off the SPT after I disconnect it from the computer or power supply?

When you disconnect the SPT from the power supply (USB charger or computer) it will switch off automatically. You do not need to press any button.

What do the different colours of the indicator light indicate?

» Green -The SPT is  sufficiently charged for the use in the next night (at least 8 hours of use).
» Orange The SPT needs to be charged before the next use.
» Red –  The SPT needs to be reset. Please consult the troubleshoot section of the manual.
» Blue – The SPT shows the amount of vibrational feedback that was given during the past night.
» White – The SPT shows you how many times you slept on your back during the past night. SPT also blinks white when switching off.
» Purple -Warning! Do not disconnect the device from the computer. The device is installing new firmware. This will take about one minute. Wait until the purple light dims before disconnecting the device from your computer.

Why does it take some time for Windows to recognise the SPT?

The first time you connect the SPT to the computer the Windows operating system has to detect the device and initialise (setup) the drivers that were installed.

» 1. Connect the SPT to the computer

» 2. Wait until the notification (small notification dialog on bottom right of the screen) indicates ‘Device driver software installed successfully.’

Windows indicates that the USB drivers cannot be configured.

Either the USB drivers were not installed correctly or the USB cable is not working properly.

» Disconnect the SPT from the computer and go to the directory of the USB stick. In the folder ‘Drivers’ double-click ‘CDM20814_Setup.exe’ to (re-)install the USB drivers.

» Re-connect the SPT to the computer and wait until Windows indicates ‘Device driver software installed successfully’.

» Contact your distributor if this does not solve the problem.

How do I change the date and/or time of the device?

The settings of the date and time may differ due to time zones or daylight saving time differences.

» 1. Start the SPT Connect software.

» 2. Make sure that the date and time settings of your computer are correct.

» 3. Connect the SPT to the computer.

» 4. If the date and time between the device and computer differ more than 24 hours the software will automatically present the option to synchronise the date and time.

» 5. If you want to manually adjust the date and time of the device go to the menu and select ‘Settings’ > ‘Set device time’ > ‘OK’.

» 6. The information screen will show the current (new) date and time of the device.

» Important! The date and time of previously stored sleep data will not be changed retrospectively; only future sleep data will be stored with new time settings!

Does the SPT automatically change the time between summer and winter time?

No. The device does not know in which country it is being operated. The one hour difference should be programmed manually.

» To manually adjust the date and time of the device go to the menu and select ‘Settings’ > ‘Set device time’ > ‘OK’.

How do I change the language of the SPT Connect software?

» In the SPT Connect software menu go to ‘Settings’ > ‘Language’ > Choose preferred language.

The SPT Connect software indicates that the USB drivers are not initialized properly (FTD2XX.DLL).

The SPT Connect software can only run properly whenever the drivers have been initiated by the operating system.

» 1. Disconnect the SPT from the computer.

» 2. Close the SPT Connect software from the menu; Menu > SPT > Close (Ctrl+X)

» 3. Re-connect the SPT to the computer and wait until Windows indicates ‘Device driver software installed successfully’.

» 4. Restart the SPT Connect software from the desktop icon or the start menu.

How do I register my first SPT and a user account for the web application?

By using the cable included in the package, please, physically connect your SPT to your computer. When the connection is made you will be asked if you wish to register a new account or log in with an existing one.

Choosing ‘Create a new account’ will trigger the registration process.

When you filled in the required details and pressed ‘Register’ you will receive an e-mail with an activation link, which will lead you further. As this is an automatically generated mail, some firewalls might direct it into the Spam box instead of your Inbox. Should you not receive the mail in a quarter of an hour, please, contact us through support@nightbalance.com.

Having received the e-mail, click on the link to activate your account and continue the registration process.

At the end of the process you will receive a confirmation screen when the registration is complete. Now you can close this window and log in either through the SPT Connect software or in the portal directly.

How do I register second or replacement device to an existing user account?

When you connect an unregistered SPT device to the SPT Connect software you can register a user account via the SPT Connect software.

  1. Log into the portal through  https://portal.nightbalance.com/p/login
  2. In the sidebar of your personal dashboard select ‘my profile’
  3. Scroll to the Devices part and click on the button ‘Add’.
  4. Enter the required information and click ‘Confirm’.
  5. You will automatically return to the ‘my profile’ view with the newly-entered SPT number showing among your listed devices.

Can I register a new account with a previously registered Sleep Position Trainer?

Yes, once the previous registration has been de-coupled from the SPT. Each device has a unique serial number, which can only be registered to one active user account. Once the de-registration is complete, you may register the device for your new account.

How-come I did not receive an e-mail after the SPT Connect registration?

» 1. Check the spam-folder of your e-mail. Automatically generated e-mails are often marked as undesired messages (‘spam’).

 

» 2. Did you register your SPT with an authentic and valid e-mail address? If not, contact customer support at support@nightbalance.com.

Your username equals your e-mail address.

Your password can be reset from the login screen with your username.

  1. Log into the NightBalance portal.  https://portal.nightbalance.com/p/login
  2. Click on ‘Forgotten your password?”
  3. Fill in your e-mail address and click on ‘Submit request’
  4. Open your mail, click on the link and follow the steps.

Can I view my previously uploaded sleep data from a different computer?

Yes, you can access your previously uploaded sleep data from any computer with an internet connection and internet browser support.

» 1. Go to  https://portal.nightbalance.com/p/login.

» 2. Supply your e-mail address and password and click on the ‘login’ button.

» 3. View your sleep data online.

I cannot continue to the next page at the instruction video during the registration!

It is important to NightBalance that the users of the SPT clearly understand the use of the product. Therefore it is not possible to skip the movie.

» 1. Click on the center of the videoscreen to start the video.

» 3. When the video has finished the ‘Next’ button will appear.

During the registration I need to choose my specialist. What should I do if my treating specialist is not in the list or if I want to skip the selection?

If you wish to skip the selection, leave the field empty and carry on with the registration. You can always add your specialist later through your profile page.

When your specialist is not on the provided list, please, contact us at support@nightbalance.com . You will need to provide:
– full name of your specialist
– name of hospital and department
– e-mail address of the specialist

NightBalance will invite your specialist to create a profile in the portal and add the name to the selection list. Then you will be able to add him/her to your profile.

Once you have added your specialist, please, control the Privacy & Communications settings of your profile:

  1. Click on the ‘Edit’ button under Privacy & Communications.
  2. Make sure that a ‘Yes’ is showing behind the ‘Allow your specialist access’ sentence. If not, please, adjust the setting by moving the slider. (The same way you are able to grant your distributor and/or NightBalance access to your data here.)

How do I change my profile settings?

You can edit your profile settings in the web portal.

  1. Log into the portal through  https://portal.nightbalance.com/p/login
  2. In the sidebar of your personal dashboard select ‘my profile’.
  3. Click on the ‘Edit’/’Add’ button at the part you wish to update.
  4. Make the necessary changes and click ‘Save’ when ready.
  5. You will return to the ‘my profile’ view.

How do I install the software?


Place the installation USB-stick in a suitable port of your computer or download SPT Connect software from our site. (nightbalance.com/support/software)
Double-click the SPTConnectSetup file to start it. Your Windows Firewall might consider the software unsafe and advise against running it. Nevertheless click on the ‘Run anyway’ option here.
The SPT Connect Setup Wizard opens. Follow the instructions given by it.
At a certain stage you will be warned about the application being from an unknown publisher and asked if you want to allow it to make changes to your computer. Please, give a positive answer.
On the last screen of the Wizard you can mark a checkbox to start SPT Connect upon completing the installation immediately. This will lead you to a screen asking you to connect the SPT to your computer.

By using the cable included in the package, please, physically connect your SPT to your computer. When the connection is made you will be asked if you wish to register a new account or log in with an existing one.

I cannot see the sign-in form?

Please, check the zoom settings of your computer. It might be set to more than 100%, which could be the cause for your not seeing all the fields in the form. To correct this you should go to Display Properties, change the zoom level to 100% and save the changes.
When you resume the registration process, all required fields should be accessible.

Windows is asking for .net framework?


The .net framework is a large Windows library, which provides services to other softwares, for example our SPT Connect. If at any point when trying to use the software this request shows, it might indicate that the current .net framework on your computer is not up-to-date. The best solution is to remove the SPT Connect software from your computer completely and then re-install it. The installer will update it to assure that the SPT Connect software can run properly.

Can I use the device with Apple?


SPT Connect is compatible with Windows 7 and all its newer versions. Unfortunately it does not work with Apple software. To overcome this problem we in the office use the program Parallels, which seems to work satisfactorily.

Which Windows versions is the software compatible with?

The SPT Connect software is compatible with all Windows version newer than Vista so 7, 8 and 10 are all good combinations.

How much data can the device store?

The device can store up to 120 days worth of collected data. However when the memory is full the device will not store new data any more, which is the reason we advise you to create a profile in our web portal and upload data to your online profile. As the memory of the device is filling up you will experience the following when connecting it to a computer:
– receive a warning when the memory is 70% full
– receive a warning with the option to format the device when the memory is 80% full
– have the memory automatically erased when it is 90% full (after uploading the data to your online profile)

How do I know whether an update is available? Why and how should I install the software update?

The software of NightBalance is continually improving and thus new features and bugfixes are introduced. Therefore it is important to keep your software up-to-date. Whenever you update the software all the settings of the device and the software are maintained.

The SPT Connect software can be updated from within the SPT Connect software via the Menu > ‘Settings’ > ‘Check for updates’. This method is a little tricky when you do not know how to close a running SPT Connect software program. Therefore we only explain the following method:

» 1. In order to avoid difficulties it is preferred to install the update without the SPT Connect software activated.

 

» 2. Close the SPT Connect software via the menu > SPT > Close (Ctrl+X).

 

» 3. Make sure that you are connected to the internet.

 

» 4. Go to the start menu and select ‘Start’ > ‘Programs’ > ‘NightBalance’ > ‘Check for updates’.

 

» 5. If your software is up-to-date you will be notified. Otherwise you will be presented with the option to update your software.

 

» 6. Use the update wizard to download and install the new version of the SPT Connect software.

 

» Finished? Restart the SPT Connect software.

Firmware update

 

New firmware update is available! What does this mean? Why and how should I install the firmware update?

The firmware for the Sleep Position Trainer defines the behavior of the device. This firmware is continually improving and new features are implemented to for the training process and comfortable use. Therefore with the latest firmware you will always have the most optimal training program available to you. Whenever you update the firmware both the settings and data of the device are maintained.

» 1. Connect the SPT to the computer and start the SPT Connect software.

 

» 2. Only if a new firmware update is available you will receive a notification with ‘New firmware available’.

 

» 3. If a firmware update is available click ‘OK’ to download and install the firmware.

 

» 4. The indicator light on the device will show a purple light while the firmware update is installed.

 

» Important! Do not disconnect the device while the purple light is showing.

 

» If the indicator light turns green again the firmware is updated successfully and you can disconnect the device.

General usage

 

I am still snoring at night. Is the treatment working?


The goal of the treatment is to train you not to sleep on your back. Keeping you off your back should decrease the amount of apnea events you experience while in a supine position. However you may still experience residual apnea and/or snoring events in any position you are sleeping in. Please, continue the treatment and discuss with your specialist on how to proceed.

Can I get out of the bed during the night?


If you need to get out of bed during the night, you can pause the device. This will stop the device from reacting to a supine position for a period of 20 minutes.

Can I still sleep on my stomach?


Yes, the device functions in any sleeping position.

Can I wear the strap on top of my clothes?


Preferably not. The device works best when the strap is in direct contact with the skin.

Can I also charge the device at 110 volt?


Yes. The device is delivered with a charger, which is able to handle input between 100 – 240V.

Does the device make a sound?

The device encourages the user to turn from a supine position by vibrating gently. This vibration can be perceived by some as a soft sound. However there is no purpose-built sound function in the device.

Where can I find my serial number?

At the bottom side of the device you find a label with, among other things, the serial number on. The number is consist of the letters SPT, followed by the letters PX, followed by a six-digit number – as you can see under the blue marker in this picture.

What is the size of the packaging?

The complete package comes in a box, which is 315mm x 115mm x 40mm and weighs approximately 400 – 450 grams.

What is in the packaging?

The packaging contains a user manual, a torso strap, a charger, a USB-cable, a USB stick with SPT Connect software and the device (the SPT) itself.

How long does the device last?

The estimated life cycle of the device is at least two years.

How does it work?

You go to bed and fall asleep in any position you like. The 30-minute falling asleep period starts when you switch on the SPT and lay down. Once the falling asleep period is over the device starts giving vibrational feedback when you lay on your back to encourage you to turn. The SPT will automatically adjust the intensity of the vibrations depending on your reaction.
During the first two nights you will not receive any vibrational feedback. The device will only measure the time you spend sleeping on your back.
Between the third and ninth night the device will gradually build up the amount of feedback to decrease the time you spend sleeping on your back.
From the tenth night onwards the device will provide vibrational feedback every time you lay on your back.

Can I adjust the vibrations?

No. The SPT automatically adjusts the vibration intensity based on your sleep behaviour.

How do I place the device in the strap?

Put the strap around your torso, just below your chest, with the pocket in the centre. Pull it through the buckle and fasten it with the Velcro to be tight but not uncomfortable. Place the SPT in the pocket the arrow on its back pointing upwards and towards you then close the flap.

How can I clean the device?

You can wipe the device with a dry cloth. Do not wash or submerge it in water as this may prove detrimental to its functioning. Do not spray cleaning fluids directly onto the device. The device may not be cleaned using chemicals or other substances that may cause damage to the device such as acetone, phenols or disinfectants. Prevent moisture or damp getting into the USB-port of the device.

The device did not vibrate at all.

Please, check if the device was switched on. If it was, please, check whether you might still be in the training period of the Comfort Program. For more information on the Comfort Program, please, consult the provided manual. You may also wish to conduct a simple test of the function by laying the device, switched on, on its back for half an hour. How do I know the device is working?

When you turn on the device the indicator light flashes green. This green light keeps slowly blinking as long as the device is on.

Which size of strap do I need?

The entire torso strap is covered with Velcro-enabled material allowing the adjustment in the full length of the torso strap. The buckle and Velcro enables you to secure the torso strap tightly around the chest. Yet the torso strap is available in three different sizes: S, M/L and XL. The S-sized strap is designed for users with a maximum chest circumference of 110 cm. Users with a chest circumference between 110 and 125cm are advised to choose the M/L-sized strap. Users with a chest circumference greater than 125cm are advised to select the XL-sized strap. Your local distributor should be able to provide you a fitting strap when purchasing the SPT.

Can I wash the strap?

Yes, you hand-wash it in warm water and let it dry hanging up. The torso strap should never be bleached, ironed, dry-cleaned or dried in a drier.

How long does the battery last?

Once fully charged the battery can last for three to four days. Some of our users, however, reported more than five days of usage on a single charge.
The total battery life is specified as two years based on production warranty.

How long does it take to charge the device?

To fully charge the device with the charger through an electric socket takes about 1.5 hours. To charge it through a computer takes somewhat longer.

How do I wear the device?

How can I charge the device?

You can charge the device by plugging it into a main after having connected it to the charger plug. You can also charge the device by connecting it to your computer through a USB-port. Please, use only the NightBalance-provided cable and charger.

How do I turn on the pause mode?

To activate the pause mode you need to turn the strap by 90 degrees away from your chest for 5 seconds or simply get up.

How does the pause mode work?

In pause mode the device does not vibrate for a period of 20 minutes, even if supine position is detected eventually.

I forgot to turn the device on.

Note your estimated sleep time in your sleep diary with a note ‘forgotten to turn the device on’.

Turn off your device. Note your estimated sleep time in your sleep diary and add a note ‘forgotten to turn the device off’. If the elapsed time was very long, you may need  to recharge the device before using it again.

How do I turn the device on?

Press the On/Off switch under the turquoise flap. The indicator light will flash green to show that the device is ready to be used.

Can I try the device first?


There is a special version of the device called Experience, which is set up for a 28-day tryout period. You can ask your specialist for the Experience. Either he/she will be able to provide you with a this device or he/she will point you to the local distributor for it.

Reports

 

How do I read out my data?


The Sleep Position Trainer stores all the information gathered during the night in the internal memory. When the device is physically connected to your computer it automatically uploads the stored data to your online profile. You can view this information by logging in to our portal  https://portal.nightbalance.com/p/login

You can see what percentage of the night you spent lying on your back, how long you spent in which specific position per night and how often the sensor produced a stimulus in the form of a vibration. There are daily and weekly overviews available.

What numbers are good in the reports?


Generally speaking any reduction of the supine percentage is positive and an indication that you are responding to the treatment. However your treating specialist is the one, who can best evaluate your results. Please, contact him/her directly.

I got a PDF report. What does it mean?

Your specialist creates the report by reading out your device with a special program. The report is an overview of your sleep data covering your training progress, an overview of the sleep positions detected and an overview of your responsiveness to the device.

Do I need to keep using the SPT?


Generally speaking it takes time before the positive effects of the treatment are noticeable on a personal level. Also, stopping using the device might result in a relapse. I am still snoring. What now?


The SPT is a CE class I certified medical device to treat positional sleep apnea. The device measures the sleep behaviour of the user continuously and gives a gentle vibration when the user turns into the supine position. This encourages the user to change the sleeping position without waking up. The device does not monitor snoring and only effects it as long as it is related to the apnea event.

I am still sleeping on my back. What now?

My spouse is woken up by the device.

The device encourages the user to turn from a supine position by vibrating gently. This vibration can be perceived by some as a soft sound and find it initially disturbing. You might try to wear the device under your night clothes to dampen the sound.

I think my response is worsening. What now?

I am still sleepy/tired.

Using the Epworth Sleepiness Scale (ESS) you can conduct a self analysis of how sleepy you are during the day. I am not responding to the vibrations.

Can I combine the therapy with CPAP/MRA?

There are no contra-indications to combined use however your treating specialist is the one, who can best evaluate the situation. Please, contact him/her directly.

I have a pacemaker/ICD. Can I use the device?

The SPT is certified as a CE class I medical device and thus, also on electromagnetic radiations, it conforms to the standards set by the regulation. Yet some ICDs can be too sensitive to the vibrations of the SPT. Therefore we advise all patients with an ICD to discuss the use of the SPT with their cardiologist before combining their usage.

Does it work for me?

Sleep apnea occurs for the majority of people when they are supine i.e. laying on their backs. In this position the tongue relaxes and falls backwards easier blocking the airway. This is called positional sleep apnea. Research shows that when you sleep on your side your airway is less obstructed and the positional sleep apnea and its consequences subside. If you are diagnosed with positional sleep apnea the Sleep Position Trainer is a potential solution for you. The SPT contains an active sensor, which continually monitors your sleep position and gives off a soft vibration when you lay on the back. This allows you to turn to a healthy position without disturbing your natural sleep pattern. By continued use the SPT can gradually train you not to sleep on your back.

How do I know if I have POSAS?

Apnea patients suffer from one or more of the following symptoms:
– heavy snoring
– pauses in breathing during sleep
– startled awake with a choking feeling
– increased sweating during sleep
– dry mouth and/or sore throat on awakening
– morning headaches
– joint pain
– high blood pressure
– heart problems
– lack of concentration
– tendency to fall asleep immediately when you relax in the daytime

If you recognise any of these symptoms you should seek further medical advice. Your general practitioner can refer you to a specialist hospital or sleep centre. Using the Epworth Sleepiness Scale (ESS) you can conduct a self analysis of how sleepy you are during the day. Please, use the self test available on our site strictly as an indication. The official diagnosis of sleep apnea syndrome can only be given by a medical specialist.
